The Artist Shag

Josh Agle, aka Shag, is a painter, illustrator and designer based in Southern California. Elegant, sexy, playful and fun, his work depicts an idyllic fantasy of the 1950s and ‘60s—often set in and around Palm Springs—and his paintings and prints have made Shag a celebrated name on the local and international art scenes.

Midcentury homes have long appeared in his art, but this was an opportunity for Josh to transform a home into the art itself, allowing Shag fans and Modernists to be able to experience his art in a whole new way.

To accomplish this tall task, Shag has worked with some of the Coachella Valley’s most respected design-build professionals to rescue and restore this tired-but-loved classic Midcentury pool home, reimagining it for the way we’ll live tomorrow.

John-Patrick—JP to his friends—makes the world more beautiful one luxury property at a time. He is a dot connector who forges relationships in the development of fully immersive experiential concepts. Putting together creative teams is his superpower, and he’s able to draw from the large stable of creative stars he’s befriended over the years.

Born and raised in New York, John-Patrick arrived in Palm Springs in 2006. After successful runs working with Christopher Kennedy Design and ACME House Company, he’s now focused on Coachella Valley Life & Style, his busy branding and design company.

Some of the properties that he’s sprinkled his fairy dust on include the 2014 Christopher Kennedy Show House, all four West Elm Houses (2017, 2018, 2019, 2021), A Splash of Ink, Pretty in Pink, The Icon at Indian Canyons, Pickleball Palms, Knott’s Landing and now, of course, The Shag House!

Brandon is a businessman and philanthropist, and the investor who funded the creation of The Shag House. After living and playing in Palm Springs for 25 years, Brandon was looking to build something really special that could be used to do good in the city he loves so much.

When John-Patrick approached him with the idea of The Shag House—and the charities that could be supported through it—Brandon knew immediately that he’d found the perfect project and partners.

Brandon uses the property as his Palm Springs residence when he’s not traveling for business, and he’s incredibly excited to share this spectacular property with Shag fans and Modernists from around the world.

Tile Designs By Fina

Entrepreneur, dreamer, optimist, driven, focused and happy. These are the words that Fina Meraz equates to how she lives and the qualities behind her success.

Fina has taken her love of tile, hands-on approach and her eye for design and created a successful business that serves the Coachella Valley and beyond. Tile Designs by Fina, has been the source for unique tile and hard surface products that have graced some of the most beautiful homes in the area.

For The Shag House, Fina scoured the 100+ tile lines she represents to find the perfect look, color and finish that would most accurately reflect the surfaces as they existed in Shag’s mind.

Morgan has been a top-producing Realtor in the Coachella Valley for more than 7 years. Originally from North Carolina, she fell in love with the desert after just one visit and has lived here ever since, becoming one of the area’s most passionate proponents.

For our project, she worked her trademark Morgan Magic and found the exact property Shag and JP were envisioning in one of the most competitive markets in history—closing the deal in record time. Done deal!

FRANCIE FLYNN
Interior Designer

Known in Palm Springs as “The Wallpaper Queen”, Francie Flynn creates beautiful residential spaces that consistently exceed her clients’ expectations.

Francie began her interior design career in New York, where she worked with a noted builder of luxury homes. A move to Palm Springs in 2003 opened her eyes to a whole new world of vibrant color, indoor/outdoor living, and the endless blue sky.

For this project, Francie took Shag’s renderings of the house’s interior, analyzed the dozens of components within them, and either found a matching piece that already existed or had it created custom. Her “dream interpretation” talents were vital in bringing to life the incredible world Shag has imagined for us inside The Shag House.

TIM P. TURNER
Landscape Designer

Tim grew up in New Orleans and has always been passionate about landscape design. He received a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from Louisiana State University in 1995 and has over 25 years in residential design. In 2015, Palms Springs beckoned Tim to expand both his design functionality, aesthetic and plant palette for the desert climate.

His philosophy of landscape design is simple: It is the process of understanding landscape integration with its regionally expressive environment, while producing a sustainable, innovative, and distinctive landscape design that will stand the test of time. 

Some of Tim’s past projects include Pickleball Palms, The Blue Hawaiian and the Modernism Week West Elm House 2019. On the Shag House project, Tim deftly translated the artist’s exterior landscape and planting ideas into reality—and the fruits of their collaboration are really something to see.
